Today’s World of Gin comes from a country with a rich of history of liquor production, with many of its products being perfect partners to gin. I am talking of Italy, the home of Campari and Italian vermouth, as well as a host of other spirits, liqueurs and aromatic wines.
The gin in question is Tower Hill Gin, which is owned by 1492 Coloniale Group. The gin itself is made in Pedrengo, which is about 30 miles North-East of Milan.
Nose: Juniper, citrus, and celery; full of vegetable and herbal notes.
Taste: Smooth and sweet, with lots of juniper and coriander at the start, followed by a growing warmth. This definitely tastes stronger than 37.5%.
Gin & Tonic
This drink had a good, strong flavour and was refreshing with a bitter, dry finish. Very good.
A very clean and crisp Martini. There was some juniper and a hint of dark chocolate, but, overall, this was a very smooth drink; the gin chills-down well.
A good Negroni, consisting of a number of strong flavours. Each ingredient can be tasted individually, with solid juniper towards the end that gives the drink some power and body.
Rich and flavourful, this had a good balance between the flavours of the gin and the vermouth. Rousing to the appetite, I think it would be a perfect accompaniment to olives.
Cardinale(a Negroni where you substitute the sweet vermouth with dry vermouth)
I’ve never been a big fan of this drink before, but I do like it with Tower Hill gin. It seemed smoother, silkier and a little sweeter than I recalled, as well as having a little hint of vanilla, too. It reminded me of a lighter, more fragrant and feminine Negroni. Towards the end, there was also a little hint of agave, that I liked especially.
Delicious and very refreshing. The juniper and citrus notes worked well, but the gin still didn’t overpower the drink, which some gins can, making it too heavy and depriving this cocktail of its vitality. In contrast, this Collins is definitely something that I’d like to enjoy on a hot day, maybe outside of a café on the street of Milan?
Another refreshing drink; although not as crisp as the Collins, it was still pretty good, with the ginger ale adding some extra sweetness and spice.
