Cocktails with… Gin Xoriguer – from Mahon, Menorca

For this edition of World of Gin, I have decided to focus on Summer Gin Coolers and today’s gin of choice is Xoriguer Mahon Gin.

Xoriguer come from Mahon in Menorca, a Mediterranean island that was controlled by the British Crown during the 18th Century. With many soldiers and sailors stationed on their island, all with a taste for gin, local production of the spirit quickly started up.

Juniper Berries, an essential ingredient to any gin, were unavailable on the island and so had to be imported; however many of the other botanicals were sourced form the indigenous plants of the island. The alcoholic base of the gin is Mediterranean Wine, as it was and is in plentiful supply.

Today, Mahon Gin is still produced in Menorca, although the majority of it is never exported but enjoyed on the island. The distillery is open to visitors and they operate tours. Mahon also make Chocolate, Chamomile, Orange & Cherry liqueurs that are very hard to find outside of Menorca.

Very floral on the nose with aspects of fresh-cut flowers and a hint of a vanilla.
Juniper and flowers initially on the taste and a little spice, a little bit of violet and a warm, spicy finish.

Gin & Tonic
My tip for this to fill the glass with ice to ensure it defiantly well-chilled. The intense botanically intense nature of Xoriguer with Juniper and sweet floral elements is complimented by the fresh lemon garnish and dryness of the tonic. This is exceptionally refreshing and a great way to cool down on a hot day. I’ve had Gin and Tonics with over 100 different gin and this is up there with the best.

Basil Smash

Lovely colour, there are few cocktails as eye-catching as this. Flavour-wise it is fresh and elegant; starting with juniper and basil then the zing of the lemon which is neatly off-set by the sugar. The finish if of the floral notes of the gin and the leafy element of the basil. The perfects sophisticated summer sup.

Gin Gin Mule
If you’re a fan of ginger beer may I suggest as a sunny treat? Ginger and lime always go well together and the mint garnish and complex Xorigueur add an additional depth of flavour. Delcious!


Orange Blossom

Orange Blossom
Very cooling, like a very fresh Martini in it’s simplicity but it doesn’t have the dry herbal element that come from the vermouth.

Tom Collins
Really, really fresh. The Xorigeur goes very well with citrus juice making for a drink that is refreshingly tart. A lightly sparkling cooler with the underlying floral complexity of the gin. Simple & superb.



Xoriguer Fruit Cup

Shady Grove
Delightfully refreshing, floral citrus, sweetness and ginger a great combination. The ginger ale and gin creates a slightly syrupy texture with tartness from the lemon and fiery ginger on the finish.

Fruit Cup
Rather complex for a fruit cup with the floral elements of the gin fitin well with the ginger from the wine and herbal from the red vermouth. but most importantly it is very refreshing, light and fruity.
